You walk along the checkered paving and admire the neatly preened flowers. People sell churros and cigarettes.

You book a table for breakfast for the whole ten days.

You meet some new and impressively knowledgeable colleagues.

You are told how valuable, and wonderful, it is to know you.

When the ancient Desiderati said No, they meant it.

Now we face a crisis. Yes, no. No,yes. All started to mean the same thing three hundredths of a fraction of a light year ago.

We say Yes has extraordinary benefits and though it would be a long story to explain, it is the reason we can send this vital missive to you today.

Drops of lemon and honey and condensation.

The day the sun met the traveling wonders.

No storm, warm and favorable.

The garden of the Vinci Bartolomo family had always been my favorite.

On the walk back from school I preferred it to any other. Part of that was the endless willingness of the gardener to rush and gather a few fresh peaches, a bunch of grapes – whatever was just ideally ripe – and present it to me as if the estate were my own.

Ever since then I have always slowed down when passing a lush-looking estate, the expectation of having my hands filled with a sample of the new harvest lives on.
